My scientific interests include both ecology and systematics of lichens. We have studied cetrarioid and usneoid taxa in the family Parmeliaceae which is the biggest family of lichenized fungi, containing ca 80 genera and 2700 species. For this purpose, we use molecular markers while performing phylogenetic analyses, but evaluate also morphological and chemical characters.

In addition, I'm also interested in the species composition of Estonian lichen biota, rare taxa and lichen conservation. Recently (in February – March, 2019), we evaluated the state of threat for 229 lichen species in the course of preparing the new national red data list. In the framework of different projects (e.g. KeyToNature), we have compiled identification keys for lichens in Estonia but also for certain groups worldwide.

Currently I am leading the project of the Estonian Science Foundation PUT1017 "Biodiversity patterns of lichens on species and gene levels: testing potential tools for evaluating community qualities (2016–2019). Recently I have participated in the project "Smart biodiversity conservation in Estonian natural and managed forests: ecoinformatical solutions case-study in Southern Estonia" led by Prof. Meelis Pärtel. I also belong to the Editorial Board of the journal "Folia Cryptogamica Estonica" being responsible for lichenological contributions.
